Reader's Digestion: "Everything is Tuberculosis"
What I am reading/listening to as a PhD candidate working on the neuromicrobiome.
This month I picked up Everything is Tuberculosis by John Green, and as a microbiologist, I couldn’t wait to dive in. I rated it 5 stars on Goodreads, here’s why:
As a PhD candidate, I spend every day thinking about disease and the uphill battles we face in treating it. John captures that urgency beautifully. His writing highlights the global challenges of eliminating tuberculosis, while also underscoring the looming crisis of antibiotic resistance. It’s a necessary piece of scientific writing that doesn’t shy away from the emotional toll disease takes on those who experience it.
His prose is classic John Green, with an intimate, reflective, and deeply human narrative. He connects the biology of the disease with the lived realities of the people most affected, showing that science is never separate from society.
I’ve known for a while that John has been fascinated by TB, and as a scientist, I couldn’t be prouder of how well he executed this book. It’s a reminder that science communication at its best is both educational and empathetic.
